Update: Canada’s Bondage Judge

Madam Justice Lori Douglas and her husband lawyer Jack King had a festering lawsuit on their hands. Yesterday, the Manitoba Supreme Court dismissed former client Alex Chapman’s claims against Jack King for sexual harassment, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Chapman had previously dropped his claims against the Judge and Mr. King’s former law firm Thompson Sweatman Dorfman. So what happened?

Jack King’s lawyer brought an application to dismiss Mr. Chapman’s lawsuit on two grounds: that Chapman had signed an agreement in 2003 and received $25,000.00 in exchange for keeping quiet about King’s bizarre behavior and Chapman had waited too long (seven years) to bring his lawsuit. The Supreme Court agreed with King on both grounds.

But it is not all over. Far from it. Jack King still has his outstanding lawsuit against Alex Chapman for breaching the confidentiality provisions of their 2003 agreement. The Law Society of Manitoba has brought three charges of professional misconduct against Jack King and the Canadian Judicial Council is still investigating Judge Lori Douglas, who has stepped down from her position pending the outcome of their investigation.

The Winnipeg Free Press continues to challenge Manitoba’s Law Society over what they knew in 2003 and what steps they took to protect the public, which is, of course, one of the paramount mandates of a Law Society in Canada.

I’ll continue to follow this story and provide updates. See previous posts on Canada’s Bondage Judge in Archives on September 4, 6 and 10, 2010.
