I’ve practiced family law for 22 years and I’ve never seen a year so crammed with celebrity divorces. Now, as a divorce lawyer I naturally pay attention to stories about divorce, but in 2010 you would have to live in a cave in Afghanistan not to notice the proliferation of broken marriages.
From business icons to sports stars, televangelists to reality TV stars, hardly a day went by where one of the leading new stories didn’t report a celebrity divorce.
A few of the surprise divorces included:
1. Televangelist Benny Hinn
Hinn and his wife Suzanne were married in 1979 and had four children. In February 2010 Mrs. Hinn filed for divorce. Benny Hinn suggested to the press that the reason for the marriage breakdown was his punishing travel schedule to attend his Miracle Campaigns around the world.
Cynics and skeptics link the Hinn divorce to the Paula White divorce. Paula and Randy White operated a mega-church in Tampa Florida until their parting. Today Paula White holds the reins at the Tampa Church and has her own TV show.
Hinn had difficulty denying his “friendship” with Paula White after photos surfaced of them walking the streets of Rome, hand-in-hand.
2. Scarlett Johannson and Ryan Reynolds
After Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds dumped his fiancee, Alanis Morissette, he quickly jumped into a relationship with blonde beauty Scarlett Johannson. Lo and behold, a short time later the two were married in Tofino, BC. On December 14, 2010 they announced their decision to divorce. The marriage lasted only two years.
Reynold’s next big role is in the movie Green Lantern.
Johannson has won several Golden Globes and a Tony Award. She was recently named GQ Magazine’s “Babe of the Year”.
3. Sandra Bullock and Jesse James
The entertainment world was stunned when golden girl Bullock was publicly humiliated by her husband of five years. Turns out Jesse had an active social life, particularly when Sandra would be away working on her movies. Jesse, host of TV’s Monster Garage, publicly apologized to his wife, but it seems that Sandra was not going to give him a second chance.
Ironically, but for her husband’s betrayal, 2010 was a stellar year for Ms. Bullock, as she won numerous acting awards and the Oscar for her role in The Blind Side. She also adopted an African-American baby.
What can we make of all this marriage unhappiness? Legendary actress Lauren Bacall had this to say:
“In Hollywood, an equitable divorce settlement means each party getting 50% of the publicity.”
