Who better than a family law lawyer to explode some common divorce myths?
#1 SECOND MARRIAGES TEND TO BE MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN FIRST MARRIAGES
NOT TRUE: The research shows that, in fact, spouses in second marriages are more likely to divorce than those in first marriages. What I say to my clients is: Don’t think it’s going to be any easier the second time around.
Marriage is work, hard work.”
#2 YOUR MARRIAGE IS MORE LIKELY TO SUCCEED IF YOU LIVE TOGETHER BEFORE MARRIAGE
NOT TRUE: Studies have proved that cohabitation before marriage is one indicator of an eventual divorce. There are a myriad of reasons but most researchers say that people who live together before marriage are more casual about relationships generally and find it easier to walk away when troubles arise.
#3 MEN TEND TO INITIATE DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS MORE OFTEN THAN WOMEN
NOT TRUE: Once again, social scientists tell us that women more often initiate legal proceedings against their husbands. One theory is that women are more concerned about custody of children. Another is that men exhibit more bad behavior i.e. drinking and philandering. (I think the latter is another divorce myth!)
